Absolutely correct, Robert — It’s amazing how many energy efficiency / renewable resource companies get this wrong. The ONLY thing that matters to the customer is their MARGINAL energy price. This is Econ 1 stuff. Yet (due to laziness or ease of packaging or ignorance or indifference) companies continue to do analysis on meaningless AVERAGE prices. I actually had a solar installation contractor come visit without understanding the tiered rates PG&E imposes on residential customers. Here’s a guy selling a system for more than $30K, and he’s got the economics completely wrong.

I think most companies assume that if they shout “green” loud enough, they’ll find the part of the market that cares about saving the planet, and that’s good enough. With even a little more care in their analysis, they could find the even larger market that also cares about saving money.

Disclaimer: I don’t work for the Windows org and i have absolutely no insight about their plans. In fact, I only saw the new UI at the same time as the rest of the world. What follows is just my personal opinion…

I wonder whether folks are considering the following… Could it be that “Windows” is just the kernel and the set of services/functionality that it provides, adjusted to the capabilities of the underlying hardware? The experience can then be adjusted, following a common UX theme based on Metro, according what can be done with the available screen estate, hardware, input devices, and so on. The huge benefit for developers and consumers would be the common platform. We standardize on the apps/tasks that we can perform, following a common UX theme, rather than on a set of windows and a chrome. I can access the same applications on my phone, laptop, desktop, TV, Xbox, and so on. Everything gets synced with the cloud. When I use “windows, I use the entire ecosystem. In my mind (again, this is a personal opinion), “Windows” represents the ecosystem that is being built to support my entire experience around apps/services.

I’d like to emphasize again that this represents my personal experience

I had recently an issue sort of similar on a laptop recently (http://dandar3.blogspot.com/2010/12/windows-7-xp-mode-troubles.html) and I would suggest stopping SuperFetch on the host (unless you use ReadyBoost), set a fixed swap file (min = max), exclude the VM location in the AV software and I’d say most importantly download & install the latest version of Windows XP Mode.

Colin,

The problem with the Skype VM seems to be on Skype’s side. There is no way to completely turn off voice mail there. It seems that Skype only forwards incoming calls if you are logged on, otherwise always goes to its own Voicemail. Some people have suggested that turning on the call screening (or call presentation) feature of GV solves the problem, but I don’t really want to screen my calls that way.

I agree that better incoming-call notifications are a must. If you’re working in another window and have sound off (as most people in an office do), you have no way of knowing a call’s coming in.

And I’m glad to see I’m not the only one with the Skype “where’s my voicemail?” problem. I was thinking I’d configured my Google Voice wrong.

From what I can tell, Latitude’s new Location History feature does not support an Android G1 configured to use GAFD, unfortunately, even though the other features of Latitude work fine.

I talked to someone today and found:

There are designer improvements, particularly that model changes shouldn’t get paved when refreshing the model. More major changes to help make the model more navigated are planned for the future (i.e., post .NET 4).

Inserts? Aside from some small performance improvements, nope. The woman I spoke to basically asked, “how’s that working out for you?” . . . she suggested that we bypass EF and use ADO.NET for the inserts instead.

I wasn’t able to find someone who knew the answer to the GUID / SEQUENTIALGUID questions I had. That doesn’t sound promising to me, but I’ll look further.

Most of these are glaring omissions in v1 (.NET 3.5) and will be much appreciated. It definitely seems like the current version was rushed out the door. This release addresses most of the quirks of v1 (for example no easy access to foreign keys). The ability to access native user defined functions on the database is big for me (because unlike stored procedures, they are composable), as is the ability to unit test without having to modify a database.

Any info on designer improvements, or bulk inserts?

BTW I’ve also had this “rare occurrence” happen to me on my university network, which does have a fixed number of assigned dynamic IPs available. True, in the scheme of the world, 2 people having the same IP and “contacting” each other thru OpenDNS is pretty slim, but in a tiny group such as an office or university with fixed numbers of rotating IP addresses, this can be a serious problem.

I believe the most minimally intrusive method of solving this would be to implement what you suggest: dns serving groups. OpenDNS group A is for people that have an account and use all the crap they offer (crap in the good way). group B is for people like me, that don’t care about all the crap they offer and just want better DNS support. group B would be zero tracking whatsoever and any ip’s that show up in both group A and group B will automatically flushed from group A.

Easy. No need to install software or do anything different than anybody does now, except have to worry about 4 dns addresses instead of 2.

I suggested a way around this in my post, actually. It doesn’t solve the technical problem, but does resolve the dubious user contract.
